How to Clean Your Drum Set
A drum set, like every other instrument, will need cleaning and maintenance on a regular basis. Since there are multiple parts of the drum set, there are different materials needed for cleaning. Overall, you need soapy water, wash cloths, chrome cleaner, and cymbal cleaner. Cleaning inside and outside the drum shells will require removing of the drum heads. Drum heads will also need to be cleaned if they are not being replaced. The drum heads can be cleaned with a soapy wash cloth. Most dirt and grime can be cleaned off with a dry wash cloth. Any stuck on dirt can be removed with soapy wash cloths. Once each part of the drum itself are cleaned, put the drum heads back on to the drum and move on to the cleaning of the chrome hardware.
Cleaning of the chrome parts of the drum set will require the use of the chrome cleaner. Remove all the cymbals and drums of the drum set off the chrome hardware. Use a dry wash cloth with the chrome cleaner on the hardware, making sure not to get any on any of the other parts of the drum set as the chrome cleaner can damage other materials. Chrome must be kept dry to prevent from rust. If there is any rust on the chrome, it may be able to be removed by use of fine steel wool.
The cymbals require special attention and cleaning and require a specialized cleaner. These cleaners can be purchased at any drum or music shop. Metal cleaners would not be a good choice, as they may be too abrasive and damage the sound and quality of the cymbal. Cleaning the cymbals will be like cleaning the chrome, use a dry wash cloth with the cymbal cleaner on it and wipe the cymbals clean.
Now that the drum set is clean, there are a few steps in maintaining the drum set and keeping it clean between heavy cleanings. After any performance or practice, the drums should be wiped down with a dry wash cloth to remove any moisture. While the drums are not in use, the drums should be set away in their carrier case or if the drums are always set up, they should be covered at when not in use.
