Drumming 101--idolizing the right drummers
If you're anything like me, the reason why you chose to play the drums is because you like to smash things and cause as much controlled chaos as possible. I'm certainly no master of the heavy-handed, crushing style of John Bonham or Dave Grohl, but I certainly draw my inspiration from the likes of them. And it all starts with shopping for the right drum kits.
Know What You're After and Choose Your Idols Wisely
When it comes to shopping new drum kits, first you must identify the specific sounds you're trying to emulate, and secondly, which drum kits best serve that purpose. For instance, if I want to emulate Bonham's thunder, I'm going to check out Ludwig's offerings. If I want to emulate Grohl's smash-mouth, take no prisoners style, I'm going to look at Pearl drum kits. If buying new isn't in the budget, we all know how little that can be, then why not consider personalizing a drum online?
Frankensteining A Kit 101
If I'm looking to buy used, I begin by looking for a specific drum online. What can I say? Frankenstein kits are awesome! I've built some rather gigantic sets just out sheer boredom that ended up rising through the ranks, becoming part of my Ace series, meaning, they are now among a plethora of kits that I use for live shows. The best part lies in having to never use the same kit twice.
Frankensteining a kit can also save the drumming miser money for other things, such as extra sticks and cymbals (Lord we know how expensive they can be). You can build the most colossal kit by purchasing each individual drum online, or by checking out your local drum shop's lost and found bin. Hint: if you're a serious drummer like me, you probably have about 30 drum keys sitting in that bin.
Expand Your Palate--It Could Lead To Profit
Finding the right drum online can lead to wonderful things. For instance, I had no inclinations to incorporate a gong to one of my sets until after purchasing a 24" rack tom. It just made sense to go bigger, otherwise every other piece would look weak. I soon realized that the only thing missing was gigantic gong, complete with a rack and chains large enough to hoist an engine. From there I purchased over sized drumsticks and smoke machines for each kick drum; to say I had the ultimate heavy metal kit is an understatement. This thing was HUGE and I ended up selling it to a fellow metal head for about 3x the amount I put into it.
Conclusion
Whether you're in the market for new or used drums, knowing what you want out of a kit is only as good as your imagination. For me it came by imagining I was John Bonham blasting out an insane drum solo, imagining I was Dave Grohl trashing a drum set, and imagining that I too one day could master the art of heavy metal drumming.
