Do it Your Way
So what does the title really mean? "Do it your way" seems more like an ad for sporting goods rather than a reference to the drum world. But these words are incredibly important to consider when it comes to learning to play a drum set, or any type of percussion instrument for that matter. Drum World is truly about all things percussion, but it also has to be about practicality and helping percussionists get out of their own head. When we say to "do it your way," this means you need to feel comfortable and allow yourself to be comfortable.
All musical instruments have this same concept, but none are to the extent as percussion. The truth is that there are multiple grips, height and angle settings on your drum set and throne that can be very successful for any given student. Teachers reading this should be much more interested in helping individual students find what works for them more than just showing them what is "right." Drummers all across the drum world have their own unique style of both performance, but also equipment and technique. Getting caught-up in what is the right way or the wrong way is the wrong approach.
Now, instruction is important, and there are elements of performing that need to be done a certain way. Learning the accepted rudiments and mastering them properly is like learning to read and write. It's incredibly difficult to progress without these fundamentals. But in the process of learning the craft, one should feel comfortable. Just like every known knot should be relatively easy to tie and untie, every known rudiment should be comfortable to execute. A percussionist should never feel awkward while playing. If this is the case, speak-up and try to find your own method that feels more natural.
Unlike any other instrument, the drum set requires quick and easy access to multiple drums. A person's height, arm and leg length are all important considerations that are different for each person. Furthermore, the placement of the foot, grip of the stick and certain other aspects of playing are also highly individualized. Simply put, when you enter the craziness of the drum world, you'll find a lot of different ways to do things. Taking suggestions and getting guidance is always important and a good student will take their cue on everything from their teacher. But whether playing school percussion instruments, or a drum set, great percussion teachers know that the element of comfort is highly important, and very much an individual concept.
