If you’re an experienced drummer, you probably have a good deal of knowledge stored up regarding drums, drum sets, and even different drumming techniques. And you may have a wealth of information to share with drummers who are looking to learn the ropes. But for new drummers, buying your first drum set can be overwhelming when you consider all of the choices available in today’s market. The following are a few commonly asked questions regarding drums and drum sets that may provide some useful insight:
How Do I Store My Drums?
Extreme temperature conditions can damage any drum set, regardless of price or quality. Protecting your drum set is important - if you are storing them for extended periods, be sure to keep them covered, and away from areas that are cold and/or damp. When transporting your drums, be sure to use cases or soft bags that are built to transport drum kit components.
How Do I Tune My Drums?
You can tune any of your individual drum components by tightening or loosening the skins with the tuning rods on the rim of the drum. This allows the can change the tone or the pitch of your drum.
How Do I Choose A Set of Drum Sticks That’s Right For Me?
Drum sticks come in many types, lengths, shapes, sizes and materials. The only way to know which set is right for you is to visit a drum store and try them out. If you are new to drumming, ask for a set of beginner or student sticks.
What Are The Basic Components of A Drum Set?
A basic 3-piece drum set consists of a bass drum, snare drum and small tom. Additional pieces may include a bass drum pedal, a ride cymbal, drum sticks, tuning key and stool, depending on the make and maunfacturer. A basic 5-piece drum set includes a bass drum, snare drum, 2 small toms and 1 floor tom, and also may include aa hi-hat stand with cymbals, stool, drumsticks and a tuning key. Different sets may offer different components or a “package deal,” you can ask your Pittsburgh drum store what each set has to offer.
Are Electronic Drum Kits the Same As A Regular Drum Kit?
While you can learn drums by using an electronic drum kit, they produce a completely different sound than acoustic drums. The biggest advantage that electronic drum kits have is that you are able to wear headphones while practicing to alleviate the noise.
