A Brief History of Cymbals
We all think of cymbals as the common percussion instrument, known for their use in jazz, orchestra, marching bands, and rock music. A modern drum kit usually includes at least 3 different cymbals, the types of which are listed below:
The earliest recorded use of cymbals was in Turkish civilization in the 1300’s, where they were a fixture in Turkish music during the Ottoman Empire. Their popularity grew, spreading to countries such as Egypt and India. The western orchestral cymbals, however, are derived from those used in Turkish military bands in 18th-century Europe, and introduced into works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.
Cymbals are generally measured by their diameter, ranging from between 14-18 inches (36-46 cm). The sound made by a cymbal is in proportion to its size, with the larger symbols being louder and having longer sustain. Heavy cymbals have a loud volume and more cut, while thinner cymbals have a fuller sound and lower pitch.
If you are currently looking for a new set of cymbals, it is important to know how to select them. Your style of drumming, type of music you play and the size of your drum kit will play a big factor in your selections. As with a drum kit, never choose a cymbal by name only, be sure to play the cymbals before you buy - it is important to know the sound and match it with your style. Many different brands make good quality cymbals that can sound equally good - it is simply a matter of your own personal sound.
