Need to stay organized while building your custom home?
Building a custom home can be thrilling, daunting, and sometimes overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. If you plan ahead and organize your thoughts on paper, the process can go smoothly despite all of the decisions that need to be made.
Decide what you want
This sounds simple, right? You’d be surprised. Start by thinking about your current home. What features do you like and what is it lacking? Could the mudroom be bigger? Have you always hated carrying laundry baskets up and down the stairs and prefer a second-floor laundry room? How about the master bedroom—would you rather it be on the first floor? Do a walk-through of your current home room-by-room and note what aspects you would like to duplicate and what you would like to change or improve.
Create a list of features
Now that you have your big picture in mind, refine this “wish list” and be specific. If you want more hidden storage or extra outlets, note that. If you want the home office to be located in the back of the house instead of right when you walk in the front door, for more privacy, note that.
Consider using a basic computer program to lay out your ideal home. Just know that some of it may change based on your contractor, but at least you have a starting point to work with.
Keep all information in one place
Having a single repository for everything is a must. Go buy a three ring binder with tabbed pages to keep track of everything (most importantly your budget) or do this electronically. You’ll be talking to multiple professionals while getting quotes and during the entire process, and don’t want to lose track of who estimated what.
Prepare for your move
As with any building project, you’ll have a timeline to work with. Don’t wait until the end to start thinking about how you will move from your current home to the new one. Start now. Maybe begin by organizing your current home. Complete those fix-it jobs to get it ready to be listed on the market. Or, simply go through your closets and get rid of what you don’t need anymore so you aren’t paying a moving company to pack and move items you’ll be disposing of later anyway. It’s never too soon to start this backend process.
